Ancient Egypt - A Potted History

Egypt's history as a unified Kingdom began in circa 3150 BC, established by King Menes. For the next three millennia, thirteen dynasties ruled until 341 BC when the country fell to the Persians. Over the following Centuries rule of the country passed hands to the Greeks, Romans and Byzantines. The Arabs took control of Egypt in the 7th Century introducing the Arabic language and Islam to the country. Egypt became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1517, remaining under the government of the Mamluks.

The completion of the Suez Canal in 1869 turned Egypt into an important global transportation hub, but Egypt was simultaneously forced into debt, resulting in Britain seizing control of the Egyptian government in 1882 to protect its financial interests. Partial independence came in 1922, with full sovereignty being achieved following World War II.

The Pyramids

There are over 100 pyramids known today in Egypt, which were originally built as tombs to the Pharoah's. The largest and most well known of these pyramids are located at Giza and include the ‘Great Pyramid' which was built for the Pharoah Khufu. Most of these houses of eternity can be found near Cairo and the Nile Delta, with the only Royal pyramid in the south of Egypt being located at Abydos. There are, in fact seven major pyramid fields in the vicinity of Cairo, location of Memphis, previously the capital city of Egypt.
